Melissa McCutcheon

Born and raised in eastern Massachusetts, Melissa has lived on and off in the Valley since 1996. She received a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts in 2001. After graduation Melissa lived and worked in Edinburgh, Scotland for half a year. Still looking for adventure she moved herself to Brooklyn, New York in early 2003. It was in New York City that she met and was inspired by creative people who made hair styling their career. Seeing herself as a kindred spirit she enrolled in the Aveda Institute. Post graduation Melissa assisted in a small creative salon in New York's East Village called Whistle. She was mentored by the amazing stylists there and performed junior stylist cuts and colors.

Approaching her third year in the concrete jungle, Melissa longed for some outdoor space. She returned to the Valley to spend her days off gardening and biking. Serendipitously Kay Gregory had similar notions and opened The Firefly Salon that fall.

Melissa specializes in natural color and low maintenance hair, although she still has a little East Village punk left in her. Her general philosophy is that haircuts should incorporate and enhance the natural movement of a persons hair, not fight it. Her goal is to have every client leave her chair confident that they can maintain their style at home. She believes in Aveda's commitment to the environment and that we not only owe it to ourselves but to the planet that we live on to leave as little of a footprint as possible.

Melissa now spends her days off with her husband and beloved black lab, Omar, hiking in the woods, growing organic vegetables, tending to her four laying hens and improving their little house in Florence. She loves astrology and is an Aries sun, Virgo moon and Libra rising.
